Sierra Club

If you live in or have visited the city, you know that Seattle is stunningly beautiful; and for that matter, so is the entire state. Residents want to keep it that way, too, and as a result are very active at a local level of the national Sierra Club; not only on an environmental level but a legislative level as well.In fact, the Cascade Chapter of the Sierra Club has listed the following legislative priorities for 2011:

  • Budget Solutions for the Environment
  • Coal Free Future for Washington
  • Freshwater Pollution Control Act (Phosphorous)
  • Sustainable and Equitable Transit Funding
  • Working for Clean Water (Stormwater Bill)

In addition to the above, the club’s conservation priorities include:

  • Promoting clean transportation
  • Clean air and water
  • Increasing the use of alternative and renewable resouorces
  • Promoting energy efficiency
  • Protect wildlife and forests within the state

And there are a ton of other initiatives and areas of interest as you can imagine with a national membership of 1.4 million and an organization that dates back to 1892. If you’ve long heard of the Sierra Club and been interested in joining but haven’t (for whatever reason), we suggest that there’s no time like the present. You can either start at the local level or contact the national offices at 415.977.5500 to determine where your areas of interest can best be utilized to help keep Washington the great state that we know it as.
